Chệt Beach originates from an ancient legend, and it is this very tale that has given rise to its name.
According to local fishermen on the island, in the 16th century, a fierce naval battle broke out between Dutch and Chinese fleets while en route to Phu Quoc for trade, due to a conflict. The following day, numerous bodies drifted to this area and were buried by the locals. It was from this event that the locals gave this area a rather intriguing name, 'Chệt Beach'.
This name is a mispronunciation of 'chết', a term used by Vietnamese to refer to Chinese people living here.
