Specifically, Microsoft has confirmed its intention to acquire the U.S. branch of TikTok, which may also include Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella and U.S. President Donald Trump seem to be collaborating on this matter, as Microsoft's statement indicates the confirmation announcement came after a conversation between the two.

TikTok is currently owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance. Due to President Trump's concerns about security issues related to Chinese companies, the idea is that after Microsoft acquires TikTok's operations in the U.S., all U.S. user data will remain in the country instead of potentially being sent to China. Microsoft has also committed that if the acquisition happens, the company will repatriate U.S. user data.
Of course, no formal agreement has been reached yet, except for a notification to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. However, at this point, both companies are planning for the acquisition. Microsoft also mentioned they might collaborate with other companies as minority shareholders in this deal.
