Following a series of rumors earlier this week suggesting Microsoft was about to kill off Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and launch a project based on the Chromium platform, the company today officially confirmed that the Edge browser remains intact, only ditching EdgeHTML and replacing it with the Chromium engine.
Chromium is an open-source web browser that supports Google Chrome as well as some other minor web browsers. This platform has been developed by Google engineers and the user community for many years.
Microsoft Confirms Usage of Chromium Core for Edge Browser
Microsoft unveils a decade-long plan to transition Edge to a Chromium-compatible platform on Windows 10. The company states their engineers are striving to enhance ARM support and have plans to improve Chromium, aiming to enhance the performance of web browsers based on this platform, including Microsoft Edge, to operate better on Windows 10 hardware. Specifically, they will enhance touch support and web accessibility.
Switching to using the Chromium core allows Microsoft to provide regular updates for the Edge browser on Windows 10 as well as other Windows versions, and even bring Edge to older versions like Windows 7 and 8.1, and other platforms like macOS in the near future.
Microsoft's confirmation of using the Chromium core for the Edge browser indicates the Redmond giant hopes Chromium will bring a more consistent web browsing experience for users and web developers. Consequently, developers will no longer need to test websites and web apps separately for EdgeHTML, resulting in less web fragmentation, easier testing, and a more consistent web browsing experience for users. Furthermore, the company also announces they will release a preview version of the new Edge browser in early 2019 for users.
