Microsoft announced today that the Skype app is being updated to version 8.54, a version that has been tested by Skype Insiders for about 2 weeks. Like recent Skype updates, there are very few changes in this update. But there's something very interesting: the new Translated Conversations feature. Skype has been supporting users in translating conversations for several years now, but this feature was called Skype Translator, and it's undergoing changes in this update.
Microsoft discontinues support for Skype Translator
- Get Skype for Android.
- Get Skype for iPhone.
Skype Translator was introduced in 2015 as a standalone app and integrated into the official Skype desktop app in 2016. However, last year, Microsoft underwent a major overhaul of Skype, and since then, this feature has been available through the Skype Translator bot, responsible for sending a pre-translated message after the original message. Now, this bot is about to be phased out and replaced by pre-translated conversations integrated into the app.
In terms of availability, this could be seen as a new step, as the Skype Translator bot was essentially considered an additional member added to the chat. However, according to information posted on Microsoft's support page, Translated Conversations will support 11 different languages, regardless of spoken or written language. Skype Translator supported 13 spoken languages and over 50 text languages. It's still unclear whether missing languages will be added during usage.
11 languages supported by the new Translated Conversations feature are Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. To initiate a pre-translated conversation, you'll need to click on the name of the person you want to translate messages for and send a translation request. Moreover, you'll also need to update to the latest version of Skype to experience this feature.
