In August of last year, Microsoft announced the plan to end support for the old Edge browser, also known as Edge Legacy, on March 9, 2021. The first step in this transition was the release of the Windows 10 20H2 update in October 2020, bringing the Chromium-based Edge version. The latest move in the Edge Legacy 'phase-out' is the announcement of new Windows 10 security updates, set to be released on April 13, 2021.
With the April cumulative update known as 'Windows 10 Update Tuesday' or 'B,' Microsoft will remove Edge Legacy and replace it with the new Chromium Edge. If you're on the 20H2 update, the company won't reinstall the browser. Instead, the update will only remove Edge Legacy from your computer.
If you've already switched to Chromium-based Edge, you don't need to worry about this update. If not, you can install the update when available to remove the outdated browser from your computer. Here are the Windows 10 versions eligible for the update according to Microsoft:
- Windows 10 1803, all versions (April 2018)
- Windows 10 1809, all versions (October 2018)
- Windows 10 1903, all versions (May 2019)
- Windows 10 1909, all versions (October 2019)
- Windows 10 2004, all versions (May 2020)
- Windows 10 20H2, all versions (October 2020)
In other words, if any current users are still using the old Edge browser, now is the perfect time to try out the new Chromium-based Edge. Since the release of this version, Microsoft has consistently worked to bring all the beloved features of Edge into the new browser. The company has also introduced some exciting additions to Edge Chromium, including Collections - a collection of saved web pages, vertical tabs, and more.
