Last year, Microsoft announced it would halt updates and app distribution to the Windows Store for Windows Phone 8.x and Windows 8.x. According to a blog post, Windows Phone 8.x devices will stop receiving app updates after July 1, 2019, while other Windows 8.x devices will continue receiving app updates until July 1, 2023.
However, it seems plans have changed. Microsoft quietly updated the post earlier this month, stating that it will cease accepting app updates for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.x at the same time—July 1 this year. Windows 8.1 devices will continue to receive updates until July 1, 2023.
It's no surprise that Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8, so the lack of support is understandable.
The number of users still using Windows 8 is minimal, but noteworthy is that they can no longer upgrade to Windows 8.1 because the upgrade path available on the Windows Store will also be wiped clean. Right now, check out how to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 here.
