Microsoft has consistently rolled out new versions of the Android Launcher app in recent years. In October, a dark theme was implemented system-wide on beta version 5.10, and there are indications that Cortana might be phased out from the launcher in the future.
Microsoft Unveils Public Preview of the New Microsoft Launcher for Android
In a dedicated effort to test significant Early Access features that seem to be present in the store, Microsoft has now deployed the Launcher Preview app for Android users. Essentially, it will function as an Alpha version of Microsoft Launcher.
Notably, Microsoft Launcher Preview is built on a new codebase to enable testing of new features such as landscape mode and a revamped dark theme without affecting users on more stable versions. Hence, it will not encompass all the capabilities provided in the main Launcher app, focusing instead on gathering feedback from the use of various features. A feedback button is designed for this purpose.
Presently, the public preview version of Microsoft Launcher Preview for Android showcases key features including:
- Fresh User Interface:
+ Customize apps with unique icon packs and utilize adaptive icons for a consistent look and feel on your phone.
+ Enjoy Bing's daily images as your phone wallpaper or use your own images.
- Dark Theme:
+ Microsoft Launcher supports a dark theme, reducing eye strain. Choose the dark theme for nighttime or low-light environments. This feature is compatible with the Android phone's night mode settings.
- Landscape Mode:
+ Microsoft supports landscape mode to align with user viewing preferences.
Microsoft notes that since this is a pre-release version of Microsoft Launcher, there is no guarantee that the official version will mirror this one. From its interface, the next version of the Launcher, Microsoft Launcher 6.0, will bring significant new changes. Hence, this pre-release app functions as a beta version, despite having its own listing on CH Play, in contrast to previous versions.
It remains to be seen whether users in the Microsoft Launcher beta program will need to permanently switch to Launcher Preview to access early releases in the future. The current version of Microsoft Launcher Preview and the stable release can be downloaded from CH Play. Download Microsoft Launcher Preview for Android here.
