For those unfamiliar, Windows Power Toys are small free software utilities created by Windows developers for projects related to something they are interested in. These software utilities are not supported by Microsoft and are considered high-risk tools to use.
For Windows 10 users, especially Admin users, Power Toys allow them to manipulate features within Windows by tweaking features, interacting with interesting tools, or providing functions to help them complete tasks more easily.
Some popular Power Toys like Tweak UI allow users to enable hidden features in Windows Shell and the user interface, the Virtual Desktop Manager, and Open Command Window Here lets you open a command prompt in any folder by right-clicking.
However, some of these features are now integrated into the Windows operating system, providing users with an in-depth look at the internals of the operating system that only Microsoft developers truly know.
Power Toys for Windows 10
Recently, software giant Microsoft has announced it will bring back Power Toys for Windows users and provide open-source code on GitHub.
Initially, the company will release 2 tools, one to maximize computer widgets and another for Windows shortcut guidance.
The new computer widget maximization tool (Maximize to new desktop widget or MTND) will display a pop-up button when users hover over the normal maximize button. Clicking on the pop-up button will create a new virtual desktop and maximize programs on it.
The Windows Key shortcut guide tool (Windows Key shortcut guide ) displays when users press and hold the Windows key for a short period of time.
Additionally, Microsoft is also considering adding more tools to Power Toys, including:
- The window manager includes specific layouts for connecting and disconnecting laptops.
- Shortcut manager.
- Win + R replacement.
- Alt+Tab shortcut integrated within the browser tab and better search for running applications.
- Battery monitoring.
- Batch file renaming.
- Quickly switch resolutions in the Taskbar.
- Cmd (or PS or Bash) here.
- Web browser menu content.
