Jonáš Tajrych, Senior Software Engineer at Skype, Microsoft, said:
'Skype has enabled users worldwide to chat with each other for over 10 years. We want to provide a high-quality experience for Linux users just like what we have done on other platforms. Snap enables us to do that by allowing the latest features to be updated directly to users, regardless of the device or distribution they use,' so, Skype is available for Linux users via the Snap software package.
Microsoft releases Skype for Linux through the Snap app package
Snap was released in 2016, it is a software package designed to operate on any Linux platform, whether on desktops, cloud services, or IoT devices. Snap is easier to manage than traditional repositories because it includes all necessary requirements for the application to run. Snap is sandboxed, keeping it away from sensitive devices and allowing developers to push updates directly to users and roll back features if any issues occur.
Jamie Bennett, Vice President of Engineering, Devices, and IoT at Canonical, stated:
'We are excited to welcome Skype to the Snap ecosystem. The number of Skype users is increasing, with Linux users being a top priority, allowing them to experience the latest versions and expand the range of applications for user choice.'
To install the latest Snap, visit the Snapcraft.io website and download it. It will work on any distribution that has Snap installed. Snap is available for popular Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Manjaro, Debian, Arch Linux, OpenSUSE, and Solus.
Right now, you can download Skype for Linux here to chat and communicate with your friends and colleagues.
