Rarely altering its default fonts, Microsoft Office is gearing up for a change once again, this time with user input. After 14 years since Calibri replaced Times New Roman in 2007, Microsoft is turning to its Microsoft 365 users to select a new default font from five custom options.
Microsoft Office introduces a fresh default font
Microsoft's new font collection includes Tenorite, Bierstadt, Skeena, Seaford, and Grandview. The Microsoft design team will evaluate the fonts in the coming months alongside Microsoft 365 users, hoping to gather their feedback via social media after testing.

The designers of Tenorite font describe their creation as a sans-serif style, but 'friendlier.' It incorporates elements such as bold punctuation, making it easier to read on small screens, along with wider, clearer characters.
Bierstadt font applies a modern style, 'inspired by mid-20th-century Swiss typefaces.' The characters are designed with simplicity and clarity, featuring strong curves similar to those found in Helvetica font.
It can be said that Skeena stands out as the most unique font. Drawing from various font design trends throughout history, designers have created a typeface with characters of varying thickness. While more suited for longer texts, it's also an excellent choice for shorter content like tables, presentations, and advertising materials.
Seaford is a serif font with a classic style, providing a sense of familiarity to most people. With its asymmetrical strokes and special characters, Seaford brings comfort when reading content formatted with this font.
Finally, Grandview is another sans-serif font originating from German road and rail signs. This means the font is easy to read, and designers have made some minor adjustments to ensure comfortable reading experiences.
To test the new fonts, you'll need to use one of Microsoft's products like Excel for Microsoft 365, Word for Microsoft 365, or Outlook for Microsoft 365. In any of these applications, go to File > Account > Manage Settings, and under Account Privacy, enable Optional connected experiences.
