Microsoft introduced its unified Office app for mobile devices in 2019 at the Ignite conference, offering an optimal solution for Android and iOS. It not only combines the features of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but also adds document scanning and file sharing capabilities. The rollout was generally deployed to users of both mobile platforms in February last year. However, at that time, the app wasn't available for iPadOS users.
This changed when the unified Office app was recently updated to support iPadOS devices. The release notes indicate that the product is now optimized for the tablet operating system, adding some easy editing options for Office files from a single app, along with a range of other features such as viewing and signing PDFs, converting images to documents, publishing PPT files to PDF, and more.
Office 2.46 also introduces additional PDF annotation capabilities, including the ability to insert dates, shapes, images, and notes into PDF documents. With these features, users no longer need to install multiple separate apps for document work.
The Office app is available for free for all users and can be downloaded from the App Store. However, only Microsoft 365 subscribers have access to premium features such as tracking and reviewing all changes in Word files, customizing PivotTable tools in Excel files, Designer feature for PowerPoint presentations, and more.
Support for the unified Office app for iPadOS will be a welcome addition for iPad users for document editing as it simplifies the process of accessing the most common file formats. Considering that Microsoft's productivity apps on iPadOS added mouse and trackpad support at the end of last year, it wouldn't be surprising if the iPadOS version of the unified Office app comes with this support by default. However, this is not clearly mentioned in the release notes.
