Windows 8.1 officially ends all support (Image: Future)Microsoft introduced the Windows 8.1 operating system in late 2013, sparking considerable controversy among users. Nearly a decade later, this controversy is gradually coming to an end as Microsoft officially ends all support for the Windows 8.1 operating system.
Subsequently, users of the Windows 8.1 operating system will no longer receive security updates or other forms of support. Those with systems still running Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Some also have the option to upgrade to Windows 11, although they will still need to meet the minimum requirements of the new operating system.

Now, this operating system has officially ended extended support as well. Microsoft has explained the impacts of discontinuing support for Windows 8.1:
'Just a reminder, Windows 8.1 will end support on 1/10/2023, at which point, technical support and software updates will no longer be provided. If you have devices running Windows 8.1, we advise you to upgrade them to a newer version. If your device doesn't meet the technical requirements to run newer Windows releases, we recommend replacing the device with one that supports Windows 11.'
Microsoft has also clarified that the company will not provide Extended Security Update program for Windows 8.1. Computers running Windows 8.1 will still operate but will no longer receive security updates or technical support.
