The Surface Laptop 5 has been unveiled with notable configuration updates while maintaining the same design as the previous generation. Confirming recent leaks, Microsoft only offers Intel processor options, omitting AMD, and exclusively utilizes Alder Lake-U processors to balance performance and battery life. Pricing for the Surface Laptop 5 starts at $999 for the 13.5' version and $1299 for the 15' version.The Surface Laptop 5 continues to offer two screen sizes: 13.5' and 15', equipped with PixelSense display technology featuring resolutions of 2256 x 1504 px (13.5') and 2496 x 1664 px (15') respectively, with a 3:2 aspect ratio. The display supports Dolby Vision IQ, an upgraded version of Dolby Vision, promising enhanced HDR experience. However, the refresh rate remains at 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz like the Surface Laptop Studio. The bezels around the screen remain thick as before, unlike the slimmed-down edges of the Surface Pro 9, and the webcam retains its 720p resolution instead of being upgraded to 1080p.
In terms of specifications, Microsoft also provides a brief explanation of why the company does not offer AMD options for the Surface Laptop 5. Pete Kyriacou - Vice President of Program Management at Microsoft, stated: 'We are focusing on releasing Intel 12th generation processors. We have a strong partnership with AMD and will continue to work with them on long-term projects, but for the Surface Laptop 5, we do not have AMD variants.'The Surface Laptop 5 will feature options with Intel's Alder Lake-U CPUs. The connectivity ports on the Surface Laptop 5 include 1 USB-C port, 1 USB-A port (USB 3.1), a 3.5mm audio combo jack, and Surface Connect. However, Microsoft has upgraded the USB-C port to support Thunderbolt 4/USB4. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards have also been upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
The dimensions of the Surface Laptop 5 are identical to those of the Surface Laptop 4, with a slightly heavier weight of just a few grams. In terms of color, Microsoft introduces a new color, Sage - a light green, alongside existing colors like Platinum, Matte Black, and Sandstone. The Alcantara fabric material has also been brought to the wrist rest area with the Platinum shell color option.
