Microsoft consolidates various OneNote editions into a single app on Windows

Currently, there are two versions of OneNote on Windows, including the Office-integrated app and OneNote for Windows 10. Microsoft will merge these two applications into a unified OneNote experience, leveraging advancements in Windows and Office.

OneNote, Microsoft's note-taking app, has undergone significant changes in recent years. In 2018, the company removed the OneNote app for PC from the pre-installed Office suite. However, 2019 saw the return of that version in Office 365 and Office 2019, with the tool receiving new features and updates.

With this revival, Microsoft rebranded the app by removing the year from its name, naming the two app versions as OneNote and OneNote for Windows 10. In 2021, Microsoft announced plans to integrate the features of both OneNote versions for Windows, creating a unified solution within the next 12 months.

The Office-installed OneNote app will start receiving new features, along with features previously exclusive to OneNote for Windows 10 (Store app). Users of OneNote for Windows 10 will receive invitations to update to the new unified OneNote version within the app at some point in the second half of 2022.

Microsoft states they won't create a third OneNote app beyond the existing two versions. Instead, the current OneNote app will incorporate some features from OneNote for Windows 10, along with entirely new features. Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will not impact users' existing OneNote apps.

Users running Windows 11 from a clean installation or on new devices won't have OneNote for Windows 10 installed by default. However, OneNote for Windows 10 will still be available for free download from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft advises users of OneNote for Windows 10 to update to the new unified OneNote app by October 2025, as that's when support ends for both Windows 10 and OneNote for Windows 10.

The consolidation is a welcomed move for users heavily reliant on multiple OneNote apps, as there is no information about the future of both versions. The Redmond giant clarified in the FAQ section that OneNote on Android, iOS, and the web will remain unaffected by this change.
