The UK's antitrust watchdog has recently launched an inquiry into Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of the renowned gaming company, Activision.
Accordingly, on July 6, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced their examination to assess whether the agreement between the tech giant and the owners of the iconic Call of Duty brand adversely affects competition, causing price hikes and limiting choices for consumers.

In the short term, this regulatory body will collaborate with global partners and set an initial deadline of September 1 to decide on initiating a more in-depth investigation.
CMA has long upheld a firm stance on transactions, particularly those involving tech giants. Furthermore, this business deal is also under the scrutiny of the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Meanwhile, Lisa Tanzi, Microsoft's General Counsel, shared: 'The company has presented operational plans for the gaming business, emphasizing why they believe this agreement will benefit gamers, developers, and the gaming industry as a whole.'
The agreement between the two parties is expected to be finalized by 2023.
Concerning the FTC, they are currently investigating the integration of Activision's game portfolio and Microsoft's gaming hardware. In addition, legislators are urging the FTC to thoroughly examine the impact of this agreement on the game company's workforce, who have requested the company to explain allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination.
With the acquisition of Activision, Microsoft aspires to enhance the number of exclusive games offered through the Game Pass service on Xbox, and to explore the gaming sector on mobile devices. The game developer is the owner of numerous popular game brands, including Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Guitar Hero, Destiny, and more.
Activision is not the sole target in Microsoft's Game Pass expansion plan. In 2020, they acquired ZeniMax Media, the company behind the game publisher Bethesda Softwork, known for creating renowned titles such as The Elder Scrolls and Doom.
