Due to the Coronavirus pandemic forcing many companies to shift to remote work, employees often use online collaboration software like Teams to maintain productivity. This has attracted increasing scrutiny over the types of data these tools collect.
The latest research reveals that the Teams Activity Report can be used by businesses to analyze the usage patterns of each individual user. This includes chats, conversations, files, privacy settings, and even timestamps for each person.
It's no surprise that Microsoft would argue that the data the company collects is extremely valuable for adding new features to the Teams platform, often launching later than many competing services and allowing businesses to increase their productivity. However, since many employees currently don't have the choice to use Teams or not, it seems like they are essentially compelled to surrender their data.
Furthermore, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently expressing the desire to expand Teams, turning it into a 'digital platform as essential as the Internet browser,' Teams may soon collect even more data from its users.
In October of last year, Microsoft announced the new 365 Productivity Score feature to help businesses accelerate their digital transformation projects but faced severe criticism for operating as an employee monitoring tool.
Microsoft responded by anonymizing the data they collect so that managers couldn't use it for employee tracking purposes, but regardless, the data is still being collected. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will take a similar step back regarding its data collection policies on the Teams platform.
