The annotation feature coming to Microsoft Teams is part of the June 2021 update and has been tested over the past few months. When uploading a PowerPoint slide into Teams using PowerPoint Live integration, you will soon be able to annotate on the slide with a familiar set of tools for anyone who has used annotation tools before.
Microsoft Teams supports annotation capability within PowerPoint Live presentations.
When questioned, Microsoft explained that this feature is tailored for meeting organizers/presenters and can function as a virtual laser pointer for annotations, making it easier for viewers to follow the presentation. This feature is particularly beneficial for educational institutions as teachers can emphasize key points using annotations.

The company also added: 'These tools help presenters demonstrate or enhance content better and interact more by capturing the audience's attention to specific parts of the PowerPoint presentation.'
As depicted in the above screenshot, annotation tools will appear below the slide after it has been uploaded to Teams using PowerPoint Live. These tools include various colored pens.
Microsoft has shared the following detailed information:
- You can only annotate during ongoing Teams meetings, and annotations will not be saved in your PowerPoint file. In other words, after the meeting ends, you cannot retrieve your annotations as this feature is designed to enhance interactivity.
- Late meeting attendees will still be able to see annotations created when they were absent.
- The annotation feature will only be available on Microsoft Teams for Windows and macOS. Users cannot use this feature on Microsoft Teams for Android and iOS. However, annotations will display on all platforms.
Microsoft is currently planning to roll out the annotation feature in the coming days. In addition to the new annotation tools, Microsoft Teams also receives native notification support on macOS this month and the feature is currently available in the company's preview program.
Note: Microsoft Teams and Zoom are both software tools that have been widely used for professional and efficient online meetings and learning sessions recently. Depending on the location, either Microsoft Teams or Zoom on PC can be chosen to serve one's work purposes. If you are using either of these tools, feel free to share your feedback.
