Microsoft will shut down its Mixer service on July 22nd and has plans to move existing streamers to the Facebook Gaming platform. While service shutdowns are not uncommon in this industry, the news of the famous livestream platform Mixer discontinuing operations will still shock many.
While Mixer has never been as popular as streaming giants like Twitch, Microsoft managed to achieve some level of success with the platform after securing exclusive streaming contracts with famous streamers like Ninja or Shroud. However, the company is now abandoning Mixer with the following explanation:
'It's clear that the time needed to develop our live streaming community doesn't align with the vision and experience Microsoft and Xbox aim to deliver to gamers, so we've decided to close Mixer and help the community transition to a new platform.'
According to Microsoft, the new platform will be Facebook Gaming. The company has outlined a detailed transition plan for all existing Mixer streamers. For example, Mixer streamers will automatically be granted partner status with Facebook Gaming and be eligible to join the Facebook Gaming Level Up Program, providing similar monetization opportunities.
Clearly, those who signed exclusive streaming contracts with Microsoft will no longer be restricted. Streamers like Ninja are free to return to Twitch or migrate to another platform—this entirely depends on them.
The closure of Mixer will take effect on July 22nd, so streamers have only about a month left to transition to Facebook Gaming or another livestreaming platform like Twitch.
