One common mistake we frequently make is determining the direction of our home based on the sunrise or sunset. According to Feng Shui experts, to accurately determine the direction, one must use a compass. You don't need a sophisticated compass that scientists use; a simple compass, if used correctly, can also help you find the accurate direction of your home.
Choosing the Right Compass
To accurately determine the exact direction of your home, the compass must have clear degree divisions, numbers, and letters, preferably the type attached to a plastic ruler with an arrow. You can easily find and purchase a compass at convenience stores, stationery shops, or stores selling construction tools and supplies.
Using a Compass to Determine House Direction
- Since a compass consists of magnets, which can be influenced by magnetic fields and affect the needle's rotation, it's advisable to place the compass away from metal objects.
To ensure precise direction when measuring, stand with your back facing and at a distance from the house, approximately 1 to 1.5 meters.
When measuring, stand on a flat surface, maintain a fixed posture, hold the compass in the palm of your hand, with your arm at your side, ensuring the arrow on the ruler points straight ahead.
Rotate the compass until the needle is painted to align with the North direction (indicated by the letter N on the compass).
Observe the arrow on the plastic ruler, rewrite the number lying on the same line as the arrow on the outer ring of the compass.
Change your standing position while maintaining the same distance from the house, and continue to measure three times in this manner. Then calculate the average of the three values you found, for example:
X = (210+212+217): 3 = 213 degrees
If the discrepancy in the three measurements is greater than 15, you should consider whether there are electrical devices or metal objects around you. In that case, you need to change your position, move those items away from you, and remeasure.
Finding House Direction Based on Compass Measurements
The directions corresponding to the measurements on the compass are as follows:
- North Direction: falls between 337.5-22.5 degrees.
- Northeast Direction: falls between 22.5-67.5 degrees.
- East Direction: falls between 67.5-112.5 degrees.
- Southeast Direction: falls between 112.5-157.5 degrees.
- South Direction: falls between 157.5-202.5 degrees.
- Southwest Direction: falls between 202.5-247.5 degrees.
- West Direction: falls between 247.5-292.5 degrees.
- Northwest Direction: falls between 292.5-337.5 degrees.
To save time when comparing the measurements on the compass with the table, you can convert from measurements to directions by dividing the compass into 8 equal parts, each part having a measurement of (360 : 8) = 45 degrees.
North Direction (N) aligns with 0 degrees, spanning from 337.5 to 22.5 degrees, corresponding to 22.5 degrees to the left and 22.5 degrees to the right of the 0-degree mark.

Using a Compass to Measure the Front Door
Similar to determining the house direction, measuring the front door follows the same steps, but you must stand in the middle of the door facing inside the house. If you plan to build a house with multiple entrances, you should measure at the main entrance where the family frequently comes and goes.
You also repeat the measurement method three times, moving one step forward for the second measurement and one step backward (compared to the first measurement) for the third.
Afterward, you calculate the average of the three values obtained. If the margin of error is too large, you should pay attention to the surroundings for any metal objects. If there are any, move them away and remeasure.
