Guide: Transferring Data from Windows XP to Windows 7/8 Using PCmover Free
Preparation:
- Download and install PCmover Free on both computers running Windows XP and Windows 7/8. You can download the latest version of PCmover Free
- Both computers should belong to the same LAN network and have an internet connection.
- Close all running programs on both computers.
On Windows XP:
After installing and launching PCmover Free, in the Welcome to PCmover dialog box, click Next.
In the PC to PC Transfer dialog box, check the box I have read and acknowledge this information and then click Next.
Then, in the Preparing Computers to Transfer dialog box, you will see two options: Old and New. Select Old to confirm that this is the old computer, then click Next to proceed.
Upon reaching the Connection Method dialog box, you'll encounter 3 options for data transmission: Wifi or Wired Network, Laplink Ethernet cable , and Laplink USB Cable. Opt for the first one to transfer data over the network, then press Next to proceed.
In the In Progress – Search For Applications dialog box, an analysis and database construction of installed software on your machine will commence. Hit Next to continue.
Within the Email or SMS Notification Option dialog box, if you wish for the program to send email notifications upon completion of tasks, fill in the corresponding name and email fields, then press Next to proceed.
Upon arrival at the In Progress – Network Transfer dialog box, the program will transition to a standby mode, awaiting connection signals from the new computer.
For Windows 7/8
Step 1: On the data-receiving machine, you can install and configure similar options as described above. However, in the Preparing Computers to Transfer dialog box, you'll encounter two choices: Old and New. Select New to create a new setup to receive data, then press Next to proceed.
Step 2: The Identify Old Computer window will appear. Choose the appropriate option on the data-receiving machine and press Next to continue.
Step 3: Within the In Progress – Transfer PC Analysis table, an analysis and database construction of installed software on your machine will commence. Press Next to proceed.
Step 4: The Customize the Transfer window will appear. Select the files and folders you wish to transfer, then press Next to continue.
Step 5: In the Additional Applications window, check the box below for consent on the selected applications to transfer. Press Next to continue.
Step 6: The In Progress – Complete Transfer window will facilitate the data copying process between the two machines. Press Next to continue.
Step 7: Once the data transfer process is complete, press Finish to conclude.
