The decision was made after the company ceased the use of Mozilla Speech Proxy Server. Since Voice Fill and Firefox Voice Beta rely on this server, Mozilla has no choice but to remove both extensions.
The company explains: 'Mozilla Speech Proxy Server will cease operation on February 28, 2021. This server has ensured the functionality of Voice Fill and Firefox Voice Beta extensions, enabling voice interactions with the browser and WebSpeech API. As a result, developers could integrate voice-based interactions with their web content and services. These two extensions will be removed as part of the server shutdown process.'
Before being officially removed, Voice Fill and Firefox Voice Beta will receive an update to notify users that they are no longer supported. However, on February 19, both will be automatically uninstalled, though users can also manually remove them if desired.
Good news is Mozilla is releasing the source code online for Voice Fill and Firefox Voice Beta. Regarding the privacy of users who previously installed these extensions, Mozilla explains they've taken necessary steps to delete all data, so previously collected information won't be stored on any server and won't be in the hands of any third parties.
