Firefox 79 for Android introduces several enhancements previously seen in desktop versions of the browser since Firefox 68. Enhanced Tracking Protection is now enabled by default to block ads and other trackers. To enhance privacy, Mozilla has created quick shortcuts for Private Mode directly on the browser's main screen, and you can also pin Private Mode shortcuts to your Android Launcher for quick access.
Mozilla has also made some design changes with customizable search bars and tab switch buttons, allowing users to position them at the top or bottom of the screen. The new version also supports both light and dark modes.
In terms of features, Mozilla has introduced Collections, allowing users to group webpages into customizable categories for easy access. There's also a new experience for add-ons with 9 additional utilities from Mozilla's Recommended Extensions program, including uBlock Origin, Dark Reader, and Privacy Badger. More add-ons will be added over time. Lastly, the new Firefox supports Picture-in-Picture mode, handy for watching videos while multitasking.
Fundamentally, Firefox utilizes Mozilla's own GeckoView engine and refuses to switch to Google's Blink. The development team states that the new engine is 'significantly faster' than before.
Firefox 79 will debut for European users first and is scheduled for release on August 27 in North America. According to user reports on the Play Store (via The Register), the new version hasn't been warmly received by users.
