Explaining the decision to remove support for the FTP protocol in future versions of the Firefox web browser, Mr. Novotny said: 'We're doing this for security reasons. FTP is an insecure protocol and there's no reason to prefer it over HTTPS for downloading resources. Additionally, parts of the FTP codebase are very old, insecure, and hard to maintain. Furthermore, we've found numerous security vulnerabilities in the past.'
According to engineers, Firefox 77, currently scheduled for release in June (although it may be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic), will be the first release to drop support for the FTP protocol. For those who insist on using configurations that may have this issue, the option can still be enabled in the about:config page by activating the appropriate settings.
Clearly, leaving unsupported features in Firefox for much longer wouldn't be safe, so the company plans to remove all related code for FTP support by early 2021. According to Mr. Novotny, there will be no way to re-enable FTP support after this time. Firefox will join Chrome in removing FTP support.
