During the flood days in my hometown, rising river water inundated fish and shrimp ponds. Many fish escaped, especially into the canals. This caused significant losses to households with fishponds. On the other hand, some individuals used electric shocks to catch and sell fish and shrimp to earn extra income.
On that particular day, as usual, Uncle Huy went to the fields, reaching the canals to catch fish. When he lowered the electrified ends of the pole into the water, the electric current paralyzed and killed the fish and other creatures around the electrified area. Afterward, he used a net to scoop up the fish and placed them in his basket.
On the other side of the ditch, Uncle Mai extends an electric line from the house to the edge of the ditch to catch fish. I'm quite worried because, from the lesson our teacher gave, I learned that catching fish with electric tools is extremely dangerous. I gather my courage and say to the two uncles:
- Excuse me, Uncle, I think you shouldn't catch fish with such tools.
Uncle Huy looks up, giving me a warning look, then says:
- Let me do my thing, don't interfere like that, it's not good.
I attempt to explain:
- Uncle, do you know that water and soil belong to two types of environments that can conduct electricity? So, if there's a leakage in the electric source during the catching process, the released electricity can easily cause heart failure.
Before I could finish, Uncle Huy interrupts:
- Spare me the details, kid.
Uncle Mai beside us hears that and says:
- Let the kid finish speaking.
I continue:
- When using electric shocks for fishing, it not only kills fish and shrimp but also wipes out beneficial species for the environment, causing a significant impact on the ecosystem and the environment, dear uncles. Our country's laws have also strictly prohibited the use of electric shocks for fishing.
I then recount several cases reported in the media about fatalities due to electric fishing.
The uncles gradually understand, halting their actions. They come up to the edge of the ditch, pat my shoulder, and say:
- This kid is something. Not only well-behaved but also knows how to protect the environment and those around him. We appreciate your words. From now on, we will stop doing this.
Then both uncles and I join forces to mobilize, propagate, and explain to the villagers, the community, to enhance understanding and awareness, preventing the use of electric shocks for fishing.
I'm thrilled that my actions have gained support and agreement from everyone. I hope that all of us understand and join hands to protect ourselves, safeguard the aquatic resources for the environment, for ourselves.

2. A Brave Action to Protect the Environment, sample 2:
This is a wild story from two years ago, during that summer when I went to my hometown with my grandmother, in Quang Nam. The story of that day spread throughout the village and was retold by everyone.
On that day, June 23rd, the two brothers, Uncle Phuoc and Uncle Tho, were harvesting rice in the field when they suddenly spotted a group of poachers emerging from the forest. Another group was stealthily cutting wood in the area of the primeval forest in Dong Tien Lake, managed by the state. Since there were too many of them, the two uncles had to shout loudly to make them flee.
Following the path of the poachers, they found a gathering place for a large amount of wood, about nearly 20 cubic meters of precious and rare wood, trees that had lived for decades in this forest. Uncle Phuoc and Uncle Tho intervened, preventing the remaining individuals from transporting the wood. Infuriated, they brought in more people to attack, trying to intimidate the two uncles. However, the uncles remained firm, determined not to let them leave the wood collection site. While obstructing, Uncle Phuoc called the provincial forest control station on his phone. While waiting for the officials to arrive, despite being hungry and tired, Uncle Phuoc and Uncle Tho continued to guard the wood, even as more people brazenly arrived to disperse it.
When the forest control forces arrived, the amount of wood was handed over to the confiscating officers. The district People's Committee praised the anti-deforestation achievement of the two uncles. The entire village admired the courageous spirit of Uncle Phuoc and Uncle Tho.
3. A Brave Action to Protect the Environment, Sample 3:
A courageous environmental protection story I've heard is about Forest Ranger Hoang Van Cai, a native of Quang Dien, Thua Thien Hue. A nature lover with a strong desire to preserve a pristine environment, safeguard the lungs of the lush forest, he is always aware of his responsibilities at work, maintaining a high level of focus, especially in dealing with the rampant issue of forest exploitation by illegal loggers.
In April 2019, a forest patrol team led by Cai was on a routine patrol when they discovered a group rapidly transporting over 30 cubic meters of illegal wood from Charmang Waterfall through the forest to be smuggled out.
At this time, the team was severely understaffed, with only three members, so Cai quickly called Forest Control Station No. 2 for assistance. Following the traces, as the culprits were about to complete their final steps, Cai directed the forces to rush in, launching a surprise attack that left them bewildered, unable to escape. The forest patrol soldiers from Station No. 2 had not arrived yet; Cai continued to command his team to gather all the discarded wood. About 30 minutes later, while the forest rangers were performing their duties, infuriated by the actions of the forest patrol, the poachers brought more people to threaten and attempt to reclaim the confiscated wood. They threw rocks at the rangers, threatening, provoking, and mocking them. Remaining calm, the rangers confronted them courageously to protect the recovered wood. The determined and brave actions of the forest patrol forces forced them to surrender and flee. The wood was preserved intact, but the rangers suffered injuries, with some having cuts on the right side requiring 2 stitches, others bruised on their hands and back, and Cai had a torn ear, requiring 4 stitches.
Not only a courageous individual in his work, Mr. Cai is also remarkably humorous, always bringing laughter to everyone around him. His amusing stories during patrol are a soothing remedy for the hardships and fatigue of his colleagues. Moreover, Cai's musical talent is notable, often using self-composed lyrics and tunes to spread the message of forest protection, raising awareness among people to avoid deforestation for cultivation.
An exemplary person like Mr. Cai is a shining role model for us. I hope there will be many skilled and responsible individuals like him, working to preserve the everlasting greenery of our hometown villages.
