Once upon a time, our country was facing the threat of invasion. Outside, the enemy lurked, eager to conquer our land. The king, concerned for the welfare of the nation and its people, dispatched an official to search for talented individuals. This official traversed far and wide, meeting countless people and posing challenging questions, yet to no avail.
One day, as he passed through a field, he encountered a father and son tilling the land. Pausing, he inquired, 'Old man, how many furrows can your ox plow in a day?' This was a difficult question, as who could accurately count the furrows they plowed? The father, perplexed, struggled to answer when the son interjected, 'I will answer your question if you can tell me precisely how many steps the official's horse can take in a day?' Hearing this, the official was astonished. Recognizing the boy's intelligence, he inquired about his name and address before returning to the palace.
Back at the palace, the official recounted the encounter to the king, asserting that this was the talent the nation needed. Hearing the official's confident assertion, the king was delighted. Yet, he desired further proof of the boy's abilities. Thus, the king decreed that the boy's village be granted three bushels of sticky rice, three male oxen, and instructed the villagers to use the rice to feed the oxen. One year later, the three oxen were to produce nine offspring. Failure to comply would result in punishment for the village. Faced with this, the villagers worried, for how could male oxen give birth? Hearing this, the boy confided in his father, suggesting they slaughter two oxen and use two bushels of sticky rice to feed everyone.
