TikTok has been a wellspring of inspiration for many major services ever since the music video and social networking platform garnered a massive user base worldwide. For instance, Instagram introduced Reels last year, allowing users to create 15-second videos and share them with followers, while YouTube unveiled Shorts to compete with TikTok.
Netflix adds TikTok-like short video viewing feature
Now, Netflix is also dipping its toes into similar waters. Recently, the online video streaming service announced the debut of Fast Chuckles, a new feature showcasing short, 'laugh-out-loud' clips sourced from Netflix's comedy catalog. The aim is to provide users with a fresh viewing experience through a curated stream of video content, without necessarily committing to watching an entire show or movie.
Fast Chuckles is currently exclusive to Netflix for iOS, offering users short clips from series like Murder Mystery, Big Mouth, and The Crew, as well as standalone specials from comedy heavyweights like Kevin Hart and Ali Wong. The clips play directly within the app, with the option to add them to your watchlist if a particular show or program catches your interest.
Notably, the interface of Fast Chuckles bears a striking resemblance to TikTok's. You can scroll vertically through videos and share clips on WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Additionally, there's a progress bar at the bottom akin to what you see when watching TikTok clips.
However, there's a significant difference between TikTok and Fast Chuckles. While TikTok videos are short clips with voiceovers, music overlays, or dance cover videos created by amateurs, Netflix Fast Chuckles is simply excerpts from popular platform shows.
You can access this feature by tapping on the Fast Chuckles tab in the bottom navigation menu within the Netflix app. In the near future, the company will be testing this feature on Android.
