Google has rolled out a new update for the Gmail app on the Android platform, replacing the '+' icon with a new 'Compose' button. The app's email compose button with the '+' icon has been located at the bottom right corner of the screen since it was refreshed with Material Design 2.0 interface last year. With this latest update, that compose button has been changed to a Compose button with a pencil icon. The compose button will automatically switch to the pencil icon while scrolling.

This is a subtle change but will help unfamiliar users easily identify which button to press to quickly compose an email. Other Google apps like Drive still use the old '+' icon to create new documents and folders.
Google adheres to the same design language for Gmail on Android and on the web, so users may soon see the new Compose button appear in Gmail on the web. The new Compose button is part of Gmail v2020.05.17.313130477, gradually rolling out through the Play Store for all Android devices.
