Nikkei: iPhone 15 to feature cutting-edge camera sensor from Sony, enhancing low-light capture and perfect shots

Nikkei just reported that Sony Semiconductor Solutions will supply Apple with a new camera sensor for integration into the iPhone 15, the model set to be released in 2023. These sensors are currently being manufactured at Sony's plant in Nagasaki prefecture. The sensor itself, along with the technologies it brings, may help Sony strengthen its position in the camera equipment market amidst the pressure from Samsung.

The new sensor surpasses the current sensor that Sony is supplying for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in what aspect? According to multiple sources, Sony has made breakthroughs in semiconductor architecture, placing light-sensitive photodiode layers and signal-transmitting transistor layers on two separate semiconductor chip layers. As a result, Sony is able to equip more photodiodes on the CMOS sensor surface.

As a result, the new Japanese camera sensor has nearly doubled color saturation signal per pixel compared to current common sensors. In other words, the sensor can capture more light while reducing overexposure or underexposure in many shooting scenarios. For example, even when facing strong light sources, this sensor can still capture detailed facial features or subjects.

Last year, Sony held a 44% global market share in CMOS chips, according to market analysis firm Omdia. Samsung ranked second with an 18.5% market share. However, Sony's share has gradually decreased over the past few years. In 2019, Sony's share was 53%. In 2020, Sony severed business ties with Huawei due to diplomatic tensions between China and the United States.

In May, Sony announced a $6.5 billion investment plan for image sensor research and development over the next 3 years, starting from the fiscal year 2023. Sony's expectation is to achieve a 60% global market share in CMOS chips by 2025, equipped in smartphones and cameras.
