PS1 Officially Overtaken by Nintendo Switch.
According to the latest estimates from VGChartz, global sales of the Nintendo Switch have surpassed Sony's first console, the PlayStation (PS1 or PSX). Switch sold 341,662 units on January 15, 2022, bringing the total sales to 102.81 million units since its release. This also means that the Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed the 102.5 million units of the Sony PlayStation 1, vaulting into the 5th position in console sales history. Notably, Switch sales include combined figures of Switch, Switch Lite, and the newly released Switch OLED.
The next target for the Switch is Sony's PlayStation 4, currently ranked 4th (116.58 million units) in global console sales rankings, followed by the Nintendo Game Boy (including Game Boy Color), currently sold 13.77 million units. Next is the Nintendo DS, and the best-selling console in the world is Sony's PS2, with approximately 158 million units sold.
Breaking down Switch sales, the console has sold 34.67 million units in the US, 27.22 million in Europe, and 23.43 million in Japan. Additional analysis of Nintendo Switch in Europe shows it has sold 5.21 million units in the UK, 6.11 million in France, and 5.93 million in Germany. The Nintendo Switch was launched globally on March 3, 2017, while the PS1 was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994.
Switch sales could have been higher, but due to global chip shortages, Nintendo has had to adjust its own Switch console sales forecasts downward. The reasons lie in the instability related to the ongoing pandemic and global shortages of electronic components.
In the third quarter of this year, Nintendo sold approximately 3.83 million Switch units. Comparing to the same period last year, sales were 6.86 million units. Overall, since its introduction to the market, sales have reached 92.87 million units with various versions (Switch and Switch Lite).
