Last week, Apple made it official - RCS (Rich Communications Services) support is coming! Starting next year, iPhone users can finally enjoy multimedia messaging without relying on third-party apps.

Of course, the green bubble meme used to tease Android users will still linger, but knowing that iPhone will support RCS is definitely good news.

Last week, Nothing Chats' failure left tech enthusiasts, especially those at Carl Pei's company, feeling disheartened. It also highlighted the challenge of achieving seamless multimedia messaging between iPhone and Android without robust support from the ecosystem owner, Apple.

Almost immediately after launching Nothing Chats on the Google Play Store, it had to be removed due to serious security and privacy concerns. How did Nothing Chats aim to enable Android phones to message iPhones like iMessage?

To accomplish this, Nothing collaborated with a service called Sunbird for data handling. Just like iMessage requires an Apple ID, Nothing Chats follows suit. Services like Nothing Chats and Beeper allow users to log into a server, enabling an Android device to mimic an iPhone for unrestricted messaging, including sending images and clips.

In theory, this is one of the ways to ensure that external messages can be encrypted, mitigating privacy and security risks. Apple claims that iMessage is limited to Apple devices to maintain encrypted chat histories.

The issue lies in the fact that Nothing Chats' platform, Sunbird, does not assure the public that the 'server does not store user data.' Both savvy users and news outlets like 9to5Google have confirmed real-time access to others' messages and unencrypted attachments. Similarly, sender's personal information is easily accessible, and files sent via Nothing Chats are stored on Sunbird's server, making them vulnerable to potential attackers.

What seemed like Carl Pei's opportunity to rescue Android ecosystem users has turned into a farcical debacle, mocking the brand and tarnishing Nothing's reputation.

However, on another note, Apple's recent announcement, or rather lack thereof, regarding RCS messaging support, highlights the complications with this protocol. It's only been in the past few months that RCS on Android has been operating smoothly. Despite being announced in 2008, it wasn't until 2019 that Google began testing Messages app on newer Android devices.

There's another issue that diminishes the significance of Apple's RCS messaging support for users' smartphone experience. Most people chat with friends on Messenger, collaborate and communicate work-related matters on Zalo, Telegram, or Discord, and connect with family members using Zalo or Facebook. Using multiple messaging services simultaneously has become the norm for many of us. Therefore, whether iMessage bubbles are blue or green isn't a crucial concern for a lot of people.
