Initially, the French constructed a church on Ngô Đức Kế Street for Catholic worshippers, but it proved too small. In 1863, the second church was started near Charner Canal (Big Canal). Completed in 1865, the wooden church was called Saigon Church. However, it suffered termite damage, leading to a design competition for reconstruction in 1876.
Construction began on October 7, 1877, and concluded in 1880 under the design and supervision of architect J. Bourad. The consecration ceremony took place on April 11, 1880, attended by Governor of Cochinchina Le Myre de Vilers. Originally named the State Church, as it was built and managed by the French government, it had a budget of 2,500,000 French francs.
Notre-Dame Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece with its exterior walls made of red bricks from Toulouse, France. It features two bell towers, each 57.6 meters tall, with six bronze bells, and a statue of Saint Pigneau de Behaine. Since 1959, after installing the Our Lady of Peace statue, it has been renamed 'Notre-Dame Cathedral.'

Externally, the cathedral lacks fences or walls, fostering a connection with the surrounding space. In front, visitors are greeted by a vibrant flower garden featuring a rare marble statue of Our Lady of Peace.
The cathedral's interior architecture embodies symmetry and harmony between Roman and Gothic styles. The nave's length reaches 93m, its widest span is 35m, and the roof vault rises to 21m, creating a grand and solemn space accommodating up to 1,200 individuals. Illuminated by 56 stained glass windows, including 31 rose windows and 25 lancet windows, it produces a stunning and mystical lighting effect. The light accentuates architectural details, crafting a serene and sacred atmosphere.
Inside the cathedral, two rows of rectangular columns stand tall, each side adorned with 6 statues representing the 12 Apostles. The Holy Altar is crafted from a single block of marble with six angels beneath its surface.
