To number pages in Word 2016, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Insert tab, in the Header & Footer section select Page Number.
Step 2: Under Page Number, you'll have options like:
- Top of Page: numbering pages at the topmost position.
- Bottom of Page: numbering pages at the bottommost position.
- Page Margins: numbering pages in the margins.
- Current Position: numbering pages at the current cursor position.
For each option, Word provides you with predefined Page Number Styles. As shown in the image below, I selected to mark pages at the top-left position.
Step 3: After numbering pages with a predefined Style, you can customize the Style to suit your document by double-clicking on the page number.

Step 1: Double-click the page number to open the Design tab.
Step 2: In Design, under Options, check the box next to Different First Page.
You have successfully hidden the page number on the first page.
II. Numbering pages from any position in the document
If you don't want to number pages from the first page, you can number pages from page 2, page 3... as follows:
Step 1: Place the cursor at the beginning of the page where you want to start numbering pages.
Step 2: Open the Layout tab, in Page Setup select Breaks.
Step 3: In the Breaks dropdown, select Next Page.
Step 4: Thus, a new section in the document. Next, you number the pages as done in part 1.
Step 5: Once done numbering pages, double-click on the page number to open the Design tab.
Step 6: In Design, in the Header & Footer section, click Page Number then select Format Page Numbers.
Step 7: In the Page Number Format window, under Page numbering, select Start at and enter 1 next to it. Then click OK.
Thus, you have successfully numbered the pages.
