Let's temporarily set aside the narrative of the impending RTX 4070 Ti, which essentially was the canceled release of the RTX 4080 12GB back in October. It's quite certain it would've been a performance beast. Now, the more significant story lies in attaining such gaming processing power, and how much consumers would have to shell out for it. When the RTX 4080 12GB was announced back in mid-September, Nvidia quoted a price of 899 USD. However, according to the latest sources, Nvidia has quietly updated information for its OEM partners in the AIB card assembly chain, stating that the RTX 4070 Ti will have a recommended price of 799 USD for the reference version, at default clock speeds set by Nvidia.
It's undeniable that Nvidia has set this $799 price to enhance the competitiveness of the 4070 Ti, following the recent launches of the RX 7900 XT and XTX, priced at $899 and $999 respectively.
Typically, Nvidia keeps the selling price of their graphics cards quite secretive before the official release. The RTX 4070 Ti is expected to be unveiled at CES 2023. Some of Nvidia's custom card manufacturing partners have informed distribution partners and retail units that the RTX 4070 Ti will be priced at $899, identical to the RTX 4080 12GB. The $799 price information has also been disclosed by Nvidia to its partners today.
It's worth mentioning again, this information is not official, and until the CEO dons a leather jacket and appears on a livestream at CES 2023, the $799 figure could completely change. The most crucial factor to highlight in this story is that the US government has recently postponed tariffs on many imported goods from China, including GPUs and AIB cards assembled in China and imported into the US territory. Avoiding tariffs while still maintaining the $799 price tag, it's highly likely that Nvidia's and companies like Asus or MSI's profit margins may be adversely affected.
From a market perspective, the story could become even more complex. Looking at the sales velocity of the RTX 4080 worldwide at the current time, it may be reasonable for Nvidia to keep the price at $799 to ensure the RTX 4070 Ti remains competitive in the market.
