A harmful app from a Chinese developer was removed from the macOS App Store by Apple. The first person to detect suspicious activity in this app was Alex Kleber, a cybersecurity researcher. It is noteworthy that this developer still has several other harmful apps available.
Apple then initiated an investigation, revealing that this Chinese developer had up to 7 developer accounts on the macOS App Store under different names. All 7 accounts had apps containing malware, and naturally, all of them passed through the review process, 'lying' on the App Store waiting for users to download.
Responding to an interview, Apple stated that this app hid malware within programming commands, but the malware was not activated during the review process, only being activated once the app passed the scrutiny.
This malware was also controlled through third-party servers such as Cloudflare and GoDaddy, which allow their customers to conceal their identities, making it even more challenging for Apple to trace their footsteps.
Even more cunningly, under the comments section of these apps, there are countless 'fake' positive reviews, making users even more trusting to download. Apple has now removed the apps and the 'fake' reviews, however, they did not disclose what the malware could do.
