During the charity trip to the remote borderlands of Northwest Vietnam, I had the privilege of accompanying my mother, experiencing life and getting acquainted with the people in the deep and distant regions of our homeland.
After traversing hundreds of kilometers from Hanoi, it took us half a day to reach our destination. As we delved deeper, the roads became increasingly treacherous, winding through steep and narrow mountain passes. It was then that I truly understood the hardships faced by the local residents. Our group halted at a small hamlet, where the population consisted mostly of children, elderly, and housebound women, while the young men were either tending to the fields or seeking work elsewhere. The houses here were mere wooden structures with thatched roofs, their floors still dirt rather than concrete or tiled like those in the plains. Yet, amidst these challenging conditions, the children played joyfully with marbles and spinning tops on the earthen ground. The locals welcomed visitors warmly, their faces brightening with genuine smiles upon seeing guests. Despite the difficulties, every household made sure to have some corn and potatoes stocked in their kitchens, guarding against food shortages. The winters in the highlands were considerably colder than down below, yet both adults and children wore scant clothing, simply because they lacked sufficient garments.
Bringing warm clothing as gifts for everyone, we were met with heartfelt gratitude from all. I hope to embark on more such journeys in the future, extending a helping hand to the people in need.
Sample Essay #2:
If you ever have the chance, venture into the remote, far-flung areas, the deep forests along the borders of Vietnam. There, you will experience a wholly different way of life, feeling the genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people.
As an urban dweller, seeing the undulating hills, expansive lush forests for the first time was awe-inspiring. The narrow mountain paths resembled delicate strokes in a natural mountainous landscape painting. The beauty of the forests, though lacking in colorful flowers, was majestic and vast. The mist-covered forests, the fields of buckwheat flowers, captivated the heart. Stepping foot here, one feels seamlessly integrated with nature, overwhelmed by the pristine environment. What left a lasting impression on me wasn't just the natural scenery but also the beauty of the people here. They belong to ethnic minority groups, adorned in traditional cultural attire. Their genuine, honest demeanor charms even the most discerning visitors. They bring forth products from the forests, obtained through immense effort, to sell to visitors, both as gifts and to earn a living. These could be wild bamboo shoots, wild banana blossoms, peaches, apricots, plums, and more.
For me, although life here is fraught with difficulties, the way of life of the locals is truly admirable and worth learning from.
Sample Essay #3:
While those in the prosperous urban areas often seek tranquility and spaciousness to lead a relaxed and peaceful life, the people in remote, far-flung, border highland regions yearn for comfort and prosperity akin to those in the lowlands. Stepping foot in these deep forests and remote areas, one truly grasps the living conditions of the local residents, which are vastly different from our lives in the lowlands.
In these remote areas, especially those deep within the forests, how could one expect wide, concrete-paved streets? Mostly, the paths are still dirt roads, occasionally scattered with rocks. Crossing from one village to another may mean traversing a hill, making transportation arduous and inconvenient. It takes half a day to a full day to travel from home to the market, the commune center, or the town. Despite the scarcity and difficulties, the locals here persevere each day. Aside from tending to their hillside fields, they also engage in handicrafts such as weaving cloth. Some, due to poverty, have had to leave for the lowlands in search of work. Seeing children of school age yet unable to read and write fills me with sorrow, and I long to share some of the comforts of my life with them.
I also feel immensely fortunate compared to many others, not having to endure hardship and being able to receive a full education without worry. This drives me to strive in my studies, aiming to contribute to society and assist those in need in the future.
Here is a recount of a story about life and people in the remote forested areas, a place I am familiar with, to strengthen storytelling skills.
