Sample Essay 1: The Tale of Saint Gióng, the Mighty Hero
In the ancient village of Gióng, there lived a peculiar boy who, at the age of three, could neither walk nor talk, only lying silently wherever placed.
As invaders from the North flooded our lands, the King dispatched messengers far and wide, seeking righteous souls to defend the nation. Upon hearing the call, the boy suddenly spoke. He instructed his mother to summon the messengers and said, 'Ask the King to forge for me an iron horse, iron armor, and an iron helmet. I shall scatter the enemy.'
Since meeting the messengers, the boy grew rapidly. No amount of food could satisfy him, and clothes became tight as soon as they were made. His mother couldn't provide enough rice, so the whole village had to contribute to feed him.
When the King's supplies arrived, Gióng transformed into a mighty warrior. Clad in iron armor, helmet, and wielding an iron whip, he mounted his iron horse. The iron horse neighed loudly, spewing fire, charging into battle. Gióng struck the enemy with his iron whip, breaking it, then continued to fight with the dust from the roadside. The enemy fell like wheat before the scythe.
After vanquishing the invaders, Gióng discarded his iron armor and helmet at the foot of the mountain, took one last nostalgic look at his homeland, then slowly rode his horse into the sky. The people in the region remembered Gióng's great deeds, erecting temples and venerating him as Saint Gióng.
The moral of the story:
The legend of Saint Gióng has been passed down since the time of the Hùng Kings, continuing through generations of our people until today.

Sample Essay 2: The Tale of Noble Trạng Nguyễn Hiền
Our ancestors often taught us, 'Where there's a will, there's a way.' Those with determination, overcoming hardships, will reap success. Trạng in the story 'Trạng's Kite' is such a person. The story goes as follows:
During the reign of King Trần Thái Tông, a poor family gave birth to a son. They named him Nguyễn Hiền. The boy had a great passion for flying kites. Even when he was young, he knew how to make kites to play with.
At the age of six, he studied with the village teacher. The teacher was amazed because he understood everything immediately and had an extraordinary memory. One day, he memorized twenty pages of the book and still had time to play with kites.
After a while, due to extreme poverty, he had to drop out of school. During the day, when he grazed cattle, no matter how harsh the weather, he stood outside the classroom to listen to the lesson. At night, he waited for his classmates to memorize the new lesson and borrowed a notebook to study. When he studied, he used a makeshift lamp made of an eggshell with a firefly inside. Despite being busy working and studying like this, his kites still flew high, and his flute echoed through the clouds. Every time there was an exam at school, he wrote his answers on dried banana leaves and asked his friends to submit them to the teacher. His essays were well-written, surpassing those of the teacher's other students.
Several years later, the king held an examination. The boy flew his kite as his examination flag and passed with flying colors, becoming Trạng Nguyên. At that time, Trạng Nguyên was only thirteen years old. He was the youngest Trạng Nguyên in our country.
Trạng Nguyên Hiền remains a shining example for the youth of our country to emulate. Despite poverty and hardship, he pursued his studies and became Trạng Nguyên. His talents soared as high as the kites he once flew into the sky.
Sample Essay 3: The Story of General Trần Quốc Toản
Last week, during our class activity, our classmate shared many stories about the heroes and illustrious figures of our country. Among them, the story of Trần Quốc Toản resonated with me the most.
Trần Quốc Toản was a nobleman of the Trần dynasty, living during the reign of King Trần Nhân Tông. He played a significant role in the second resistance against the Mongol - Yuan invaders. Surely, many of us are familiar with the story of 'Squeezing the Orange' about Trần Quốc Toản. At that time, Trần Quốc Toản was just a teenager, witnessing the Yuan envoy arrogantly traversing our land, Trần Quốc Toản was filled with anger and resentment.
One morning, Trần Quốc Toản heard that the king was holding a meeting on national affairs aboard the Dragon boat. Determined to have an audience with King Trần Nhân Tông, he waited to utter the two words 'Request to Attack.' However, by noon, he still hadn't been able to meet King Trần Nhân Tông. Trần Quốc Toản took the risk of pushing aside a few guards and boldly stepped onto the Dragon boat. Seeing this, the guards rushed to stop him, but Trần Quốc Toản, his face flushed with determination, drew his sword and shouted loudly:
- I'm going down to request an audience with the King, no one can hold me back!
Just then, the meeting on the Dragon boat paused, and the king along with the high-ranking officials emerged onto the bow. Seeing this, Trần Quốc Toản ran forward, knelt down, and said:
- Allowing the enemy to borrow our roads means losing our nation, please grant permission to attack!
Afterwards, Trần Quốc Toản placed the sword handle against his neck, ready to accept punishment. The king commanded Trần Quốc Toản to rise and, with composure, said:
- Trần Quốc Toản has committed a crime against the nation, and should rightfully be punished. However, seeing your patriotic fervor at such a young age, I commend you.
Then, the king bestowed upon Trần Quốc Toản an orange. Trần Quốc Toản thanked the king, stepped ashore, but his heart still burned with indignation at being treated as a child, not allowed to participate in national affairs. Thinking of the enemy forces threatening his people, he clenched his fists tightly. When he emerged, everyone rushed to inquire, and Trần Quốc Toản extended his hands to show everyone the valuable orange given by the king, which had already turned to mush. Afterwards, he returned to mobilize his servants and the people to procure weapons, build warships, and embroider the six-word motto 'Destroy the enemy, repay the king's kindness' onto flags.
Through the aforementioned story, we have witnessed Trần Quốc Toản's patriotic spirit. He did not hesitate to defy the law to request an audience with the king to discuss national affairs. Despite his young age, Trần Quốc Toản already possessed a love for his country and resentment towards the enemy forces. These are qualities highly esteemed in him.
I greatly admire this story as it praises the young hero Trần Quốc Toản and his dedication to his people and country. The story also educates us about the importance of patriotism.
Sample Essay 4: The Story of Thần Siêu
Allow me to recount a story titled: 'Thần Siêu learns calligraphy,' which I read in the Youth Vanguard newspaper on September 12, 1975. The story goes as follows:
In the previous century, there were two famous friends, one named Cao Bá Quát, who studied diligently and was revered as Saint Quát. The other was Nguyễn Văn Siêu, exceptionally talented in learning, known as Thần Siêu.
Thần Siêu was renowned as a child prodigy from a young age. Those skilled in calligraphy at the time often wanted to witness firsthand the couplet in Classical Chinese that he thought of at the age of twelve and posted where he studied. The couplet reads:
The path of learning has never been short
Great talents continue to emerge in humble dwellings
With such extraordinary thinking, he diligently pursued his studies and became a knowledgeable scholar.
However, when he took the exam, the judges were fascinated to discover an excellent composition. The candidate deserved to be the top candidate. Unfortunately, his handwriting was too poor and he was relegated to the second rank. That was Thần Siêu. His poor handwriting caused him trouble once again. After passing the bachelor's degree, he went to the capital to take the doctorate exam. Yet again, due to his poor handwriting, he only passed as an associate despite his exam being worthy of the top rank. Hence, there arose a mocking saying:
A genius yet with handwriting so poor
A diamond in the rough, unseen and obscure.
Such is the harm of poor handwriting. Realizing this, he toiled day and night to improve his penmanship. Eventually, like Saint Quát, Thần Siêu became famous for his excellent prose and handwriting. Nowadays, those who visit Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ngoc Son Temple will have the opportunity to admire Thần Siêu's beautiful inscriptions that remain there.
