Mr. Khanh from Den Hamlet is a retired official. Everyone in the village knows him inside and out. During the resistance against the French, Mr. Khanh joined the army without knowing how to read. Initially a skilled bronze and iron caster, he was recruited as a soldier to cast bomb shells, mines, and grenades for the army. Gradually, he received cultural education, was sent for schooling by his superiors, and later became a mid-level technician repairing artillery and weapons for the Liberation Army during the resistance against the Americans. Mr. Khanh retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel but dressed modestly like a simple farmer from the countryside.

2. Sample essay number 2:
I have never done anything significant or even just a little to make others happy, except for one time when I was in grade 2. On that occasion, I found something lost and returned it to the owner.
That evening, I was on duty so I had to stay back at school for a while to clean up trash. While walking on the schoolyard, I accidentally stepped on something hard. I bent down to pick it up and found out: oh! it was actually a 18x7cm novel from Trí Tuệ bookstore, the first book of Professor Powel by A.R Belger (very popular). The book was wrapped in plastic so it seemed like the owner had just bought it and hadn't read it yet. I haven't read it either but I've heard a bit about it from my parents. It seems to be a very good novel. I flipped over the back cover and saw a short passage summarizing the content of the book. It made me even more certain about my thoughts. In my mind, I was already thinking about taking this book for myself. So, I looked around to see if anyone was watching. Oh no! There's the security guard. I waited for the guard to look away and quickly stuffed the book into my bag and ran out of the school gate. On the way, I couldn't stop thinking about the exciting and mysterious details of the book. Oh! so interesting! But my mind didn't just stick to one thing, it jumped from one thing to another. About the person who lost it. Because of my curious mind, I didn't know what to do, whether to keep it for myself or return it to the person who lost it! The two options kept fighting, swirling in my head. Just then, I got home. I greeted my parents and lay down on my bed in my own room. I continued to think. And that's it! Mom is experienced in life, I should ask mom what to do! I thought, so I ran down to the first floor, handed the book to my mom and told her the whole story. After listening, mom smiled and said:
– Now, put yourself in the shoes of the person who lost it and see. You would definitely feel sad and worried because we would scold you for losing a quite expensive book: 120,000 VND! There, you decide on your own.
– Indeed if I were the one who lost it, I would feel exactly as mom said. And if you guys know, your trust in me will mean nothing! I decided to return it. The next morning, I brought the book to the head teacher. Just then, a senior sister hurriedly ran over. When the head teacher gave her the book and introduced me to her, she thanked me profusely. When I returned to class, my classmates crowded around me and praised me.
At that moment I was truly happy. Now I know the value of good deeds. It's invisible but it can bring joy to everyone and you will receive smiles from others.

3. Sample essay number 3:
Every school day, we pass over the wooden bridge across Thia Stream. Thia Stream is only 15 meters wide, but during the flood season, the water rushes fiercely.
In September 2000, there was heavy rain, causing a massive flood. Overnight, the wooden bridge across Thia Stream was almost completely swept away, leaving only a few pieces of wood and the railing.
On that Monday morning, after the rain subsided, the stream was still raging. The bridge was devoid of its wooden planks. Dozens of elementary students from Thon Ha and Chu hamlets stood there, astonished. Just two weeks into the new school year, we had to turn back home.
Bac Chinh, a retired military officer and the Chairman of the Veterans Association of Hong Phong Commune, took action to revive the bridge. He mobilized youth and retired officials from the entire commune to cut down dozens of large white teak trees, tall and sturdy, from his garden, gathered them at the foot of the bridge. Local carpenters from the Chu hamlet were also mobilized to assist him. All other materials such as nails, iron hooks, steel wires, and cables for the bridge were collectively purchased. As a former military engineer, Bac Chinh took charge of all technical aspects. The teachers from the local elementary school provided drinking water and lunch. By midnight, the bridge across Thia Stream was completed. That year, I was a first-grade student.
Since then, the bridge has withstood five years of wind, rain, and floods, successfully passing through three major floods. Agricultural vehicles still pass through it regularly. The commune council gave Bac Chinh 5 million VND as reimbursement for the white teak trees, but Bac Chinh insisted it was a bridge of goodwill!
From then until now, the bridge across Thia Stream, from Ha village to Chu hamlet, to Upper and Middle villages of my hometown, has been affectionately referred to by locals as Bac Chinh Bridge.
4. Sample essay number 4:
My house is nestled deep in an alley about fifty meters long. Every Sunday morning, the neighbors in the alley gather for communal cleaning.
Around seven in the morning on Sundays, the neighborhood leader bangs a long gong. Upon hearing the gong, each family sends a representative to participate in the communal cleaning. About thirty people representing thirty families gather in front of the neighborhood leader's house. There are elderly, young adults, women, children, each holding a tool such as a hoe, shovel, knife, pickaxe, broom...
After the neighborhood leader assigns tasks, the neighbors divide into groups and start cleaning. One group cuts grass and trims trees in the communal garden. Another group sweeps and collects garbage along the alley. Another group clears the drains to ensure rainwater drains quickly and does not cause flooding. Everyone works and chats cheerfully. About an hour later, everything is done. The neighborhood leader inspects the work and announces the dispersal. Everyone leaves happily. By spending just one hour of communal work, the neighborhood has made the streets cleaner and more beautiful.
Communal cleaning is a very useful activity. It makes the living environment healthier and also fosters a clean and civilized way of life. I really enjoy this activity, so every week I eagerly grab a broom and participate in cleaning.
