A millennium-old cultural icon of Hanoi – One Pillar Pagoda has become a spiritual haven and a beloved tourist destination.
One Pillar Pagoda Hanoi – Unique architectural marvel in the heart of the capital
One Pillar Pagoda commenced construction in the year of 1049, under the reign of King Ly Thai Tong. Historical records indicate that at the site of the One Pillar Pagoda today stood a stone pillar, topped by a jeweled pavilion, housing a statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva erected on a square-shaped water pond. The monarch often frequented this place to recite Buddhist scriptures and pray.

In 1105, King Ly Nhan Tong ordered the renovation of the pagoda and the addition of two white ceramic-tiled towers in front of the courtyard. By 1108, Nguyen Phi Y Lan commissioned the casting of a large bell named “Universal Awakening,” symbolizing the enlightenment of humanity. In 1955, One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi was restored and preserved until today.

In 1962, the One Pillar Pagoda complex in Hanoi was recognized as a National Historical and Artistic Architectural Monument. By 2012, the One Pillar Pagoda had the honor of being recognized by the Asian Record Organization, setting the record for the “Most Unique Architectural Pagoda in Asia”.
