OPPO and OnePlus are banned from selling smartphones in Germany, with the possibility of extending throughout Europe.

Currently, the smartphone business of OPPO and OnePlus in Germany has been suspended due to allegations from Nokia (the original Nokia company, providing network infrastructure, not the Nokia brand of HMD Global) regarding 'patent infringement' of 5G technology without payment.

In Europe, Nokia is known as a major provider of 5G technology. Basically, Nokia states that for many years, OPPO and OnePlus smartphones have used the company's 5G technology 'without paying for these patents.' Therefore, Nokia has decided to sue and argues that the business operations of both companies should be suspended until the issue is satisfactorily resolved.

The German court has now approved Nokia's lawsuit. This means OPPO and OnePlus will need to pay fees for using Nokia's 5G patent technology if they want to continue their phone business in Germany legally. Alternatively, if the two companies refuse to pay, they can still proceed but must remove 5G technology from their smartphones.

From today, when users in Germany access the websites of OPPO and OnePlus, they won't be able to purchase phones anymore. However, this legal action and temporary halt in phone sales do not affect existing OPPO and OnePlus devices in Germany, as it only applies to newly sold phones, not those currently in use.

One crucial thing to note is that the court's ban is not limited to Germany. Therefore, theoretically, other countries in Europe could adopt similar measures as Germany to exert pressure on OPPO and OnePlus. If this indeed happens, these Chinese phone companies will truly face a very serious issue.
