To check the RAM capacity on a computer, follow these steps:
Step 1: On the desktop of your computer, right-click on the This PC (For Windows XP, it's My Computer; for Windows 7, it's Computer) and select Properties.
Step 2: Look under the Installed Memory (RAM) section to find the RAM capacity. Currently, my computer has 4GB of RAM.

For each operating system, depending on the manufacturer's design, there are minimum required RAM capacities (minimum specifications).
For Windows XP: The minimum required RAM is 256 MB for the operating system to function. The remaining free RAM will be used to run user applications.
For Windows 7: The required RAM capacity for operation is 1GB for 32-bit version and 2GB for 64-bit version.
Similarly for Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10: In a clean Windows installation environment without accompanying software, the required RAM capacity for operation is 1GB for 32-bit version and 2GB for 64-bit version.
If your computer's RAM usage without any installed programs exceeds the figures mentioned above, you need to check your operating system. It's possible that some function in Windows is malfunctioning, your computer is infected with a virus, or there are conflicting drivers.
RAM Capacity for Programs Installed on the Computer
Choosing the right amount of RAM to meet your needs and economic conditions is crucial. If the RAM capacity is too small compared to the demand, it will cause the system to operate unstably, stutter, lag, freeze, and even lead to RAM overflow errors. However, if the RAM capacity is too large compared to the usage needs, it will also result in waste, and may even overload the hardware system.
Some programs that require a significant amount of RAM for processing are graphic software like Photoshop, Premier Pro, or AutoCAD. These programs require a lot of free RAM to handle heavy graphic tasks, so your computer also needs sufficient RAM capacity to meet work demands. You may choose RAM modules with 8GB or more capacity to ensure smooth operation.
However, if you only use web browsers, office applications, or play lightweight games, you will only need RAM capacities ranging from 1GB to 4GB for the system to run smoothly.
These are some considerations regarding how much RAM a computer needs. Choosing RAM for your computer depends entirely on the operating system and the types of software suitable for your needs. When you notice signs of slow performance due to insufficient RAM, you can temporarily address it by increasing virtual RAM. However, in the long run, you still need to upgrade your computer for more stable system operation.
