The ancient land of Hue bears profound marks of our last feudal dynasty, with tombs, fortresses, and the refined court music of the Hue dynasty. When reminiscing about the flourishing era of Buddhism in the Inner Realm, one often recalls Thien Mu Pagoda - a serene beauty along the poetic Perfume River.
Thien Mu Pagoda sits atop a hill (Ha Khe Hill) on the left bank of the Perfume River, about 5km from the city center of Hue. According to legend, when Lord Nguyen Hoang surveyed the landscape along the Perfume River to plan a grand endeavor, he looked towards Ha Khe Hill, shaped like a dragon turning its head. Inspired by this sight, he ordered the construction of a temple on the hill, facing the Perfume River, named 'Thien Mu.' In the Year of the Buffalo 1601, Thien Mu Pagoda was officially initiated under the reign of Lord Tien - Nguyen Hoang. During the period 1691 - 1725, the pagoda underwent extensive construction and renovation with impressive architectural structures like Dai Hung Palace, Thuyet Phap House, and Tang Kinh Tower, among others. Unfortunately, many structures have not survived to this day. In 1844, the pagoda underwent architectural revitalization, introducing the octagonal Phuoc Duyen Tower and Hương Nguyện Shrine, among other features. (Continued)
