* Author
- Tố Hữu, originally named Nguyễn Kim Thành, is a celebrated poet of Vietnam and is considered the pioneer of the nation's revolutionary poetry. He was born in the poetic land of Huế and displayed literary talent since childhood. Not only a poet, he was also a political figure, a steadfast revolutionary dedicated to the ideals of the Party.
- Family background: Tố Hữu's father was a poor Confucian scholar with a deep passion for poetry and collecting folk proverbs and sayings. He taught Tố Hữu the art of poetry. Tố Hữu's mother came from a scholarly family, knowledgeable about many folk proverbs and folk songs of Huế, but she passed away when he was only 12 years old. It was the family environment that nurtured the soul and cultivated the talent of this poet.
- Creative career: Notably, his politically romantic poetry collections such as Since Then, Việt Bắc, Strong Wind, Going to Battle, Blood and Flowers, A Sound of the Zither, You and I,... are closely intertwined with significant periods of the nation's history.
* Circumstances of creating the poem Gathering: In 1946, a fierce battle between us and France took place in Huế. By February 1947, our troops had moved to the battlefield. At this time, poet Tố Hữu had just arrived from Hanoi to Huế and coincidentally encountered the young liaison boy Lượm. Not long after, during a mission, the poet received news of Lượm's brave sacrifice on duty. Touched and filled with memories of this brave young liaison boy, he composed the poem.
* Value of the work's content
- The image of the liaison boy Lượm is small, innocent, cheerful, pure, loves life yet equally brave and courageous, unafraid of danger, is the most beautiful symbol for the patriotic youth generation.
- Here, the author also expresses admiration, appreciation, and praise for the great sacrifices of liaison boys like Lượm who have made significant contributions to the success of the national revolution.
