Buzzfeed dubbed Lijiang as the most beautiful city on Earth. Trendy Chinese youth believe that leaving their jobs to open a guesthouse in Lijiang is as fantastic as owning a Louis Vuitton bag.
Lijiang (also known as Dàiyuán Ancient Town) is an ancient city in the northwest of Yunnan Province, China. On Chinese social media, fashionable young people often tell each other that every Chinese youth dreams of quitting their jobs and going to Lijiang to open their own hotel/hostel. This notion is reinforced by the yuppie generation – a multicultural concept referring to a generation formed from the synthesis of the concepts: young, urban, professional, and somewhat rebellious hippie.
Accordingly, if there were 4 things that used to excite young Chinese people, namely Cartier jewelry, Louis Vuitton bags, Burberry scarves, and stylish Mercury cars; now, 4 things that will make them crave intensely are opening a coffee shop in the downtown area, cycling through the vital artery of China – National Highway 318, and quitting their jobs to open a guesthouse in Tibet or Lijiang.
So why do trendy and intellectual Chinese youth want to quit their jobs and live their golden years in the ancient city of Lijiang?
