The Hòa Vang Memorial (also known as Kuê Trung Memorial) is situated in Kuê Trung Ward, Cẩm Lệ District. This historical site serves as the final resting place for over 1000 martyrs and patriotic citizens who sacrificed their lives during the initial phase of the resistance against the French.
Paying respects to the fallen heroes at the Hòa Vang Memorial in Da Nang
In 1858, the French-Spanish coalition launched an invasion of the Son Tra Peninsula, marking the beginning of the invasion of Vietnam. Our army and people fiercely fought back to repel the invasion. Over nearly 19 months of intense combat, thousands of martyrs sacrificed their lives, significantly contributing to thwarting the swift occupation of Da Nang.

During wartime, the temporary burial of fallen heroes was necessary. Therefore, after the liberation of Da Nang, the people established memorial sites and collected remains, erecting graves for the fallen soldiers.

The Hòa Vang Memorial was initially established in 1866 in Nghi An Village, Phuoc Tuong Commune, Hòa Vang District. When the French colonialists constructed Da Nang Airport from 1925 to 1926, the populace was compelled to relocate the memorial to Bá Garden in Kuê Trung Village. In 1962, as Da Nang Airport underwent further expansion, the memorial was relocated to its present location.

The Hòa Vang Memorial is regarded as the largest martyrs' cemetery in Vietnam, a place preserving the heroic spirit of the fallen patriots. It also symbolizes the shameful defeat of the French colonialists in their initial invasion of Vietnam.

Besides the martyrs' cemetery with over 1000 graves, the site encompasses a range of relics, including: the ruins of Hóa Quê tower; Bà temple; square-shaped Cham ancient well constructed with laterite stone; remnants of Cham tower; and the ancestral temple of Hóa Quê village. Notably, the ancestral temple and Bà temple are significant structures utilized as secret locations in revolutionary activities.

Every year in March of the lunar calendar, the People's Committee of Kuê Trung Ward, Cẩm Lệ District, solemnly organizes a ceremony to honor the martyrs, alongside the village association of Kuê Trung. In 1999, the Hòa Vang Memorial was officially recognized as a national historical site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
