The PC market in 2023 is exceedingly bleak.

A gloomy picture with muted colors envelops the global PC market, not just in Q1 but likely throughout 2023. Statistical data from reputable market research companies IDC and Canalys both indicate a significant decline in global PC sales in the first three months of 2023.
According to IDC, the total number of PC shipments worldwide in Q1 of this year reached 56.9 million, a 29% decrease from the 80.2 million units sold during the same period last year. Even compared to Q4 2022, global PC shipments also dropped by 28.9%.
Canalys figures are even worse, with only 54 million shipments, equivalent to a 33% decline compared to the first quarter of 2022. The main reasons for this situation are attributed to sharply declining market demand, high inventory levels, and deteriorating macroeconomic conditions on a global scale.
Both IDC and Canalys agree that Lenovo is the largest PC manufacturer in the past quarter, followed by HP, Dell, Apple, and ASUS. Meanwhile, Apple is the most heavily impacted. IDC reports a 40.5% decrease in the number of PCs bearing the Apple logo sold in the first three months of the year compared to the same period last year. Similarly, Canalys declares that Apple's PC sales have declined by 45.5%.

Specifically, among the top 5 PC manufacturers analyzed, Apple's Q1 shipments recorded the largest decline, with a 40.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, followed by Dell Technologies with a 31% decline. Similarly, both Lenovo Group and Asustek Computer saw declines of over 30%. Ranking last in the top 5 is HP with a 24.2% decrease.
Generally, according to expert assessments, the reported results are consistent with the current market situation, as most people have returned to work in offices after the pandemic, reducing the demand for home PC use. Additionally, in terms of macroeconomics, concerns about rising inflation, tightening monetary policies could lead to recession, coupled with recent turmoil in the global banking sector, have directly negatively impacted growth prospects and financial investments, forcing consumers to tighten spending.
However, both IDC and Canalys leave open the possibility that the market will gradually recover in the late months of 2023 into early 2024. Analysts believe that by 2024, the market will enter a cycle where there will be a significant number of old PCs needing upgrades, creating waves of demand across the industry.
