Task Submission
Đặng Thai Mai (1904-1984) was a prominent educator, literary researcher, and political and social activist, well-known for his significant contributions to the development of revolutionary literature and culture in Vietnam.
He left behind numerous works, among which is the book 'Literary Discourse' published in 1944. The text 'Principles' excerpted from Chapter II of this work.
What are the principles of artistic creation, research, and criticism? Đặng Thai Mai made it clear: 'Art has developed on the basis of social activities, so we can critique, study, and create from the aspect of activities.'
The social fabric encompasses economics, politics, culture; it embodies the system, the struggle, the material and spiritual lives of people within society. Artists, whether creators or critics, are bound to 'stand in the realm of life to evaluate, to study, to create'. This principle reflects a righteous and progressive artistic viewpoint: art serving humanity.
Building upon the aforementioned principle, Đặng Thai Mai underscores that each work of an artist is directed towards a specific art appreciator, be it an individual, a social stratum, or society at large. Hence, artistic inclinations and trends, after a period of flourishing, must also abide by the laws of time and public reception.
In the following section, the author thoroughly and concretely demonstrates the aforementioned principle.
