Below are some tips to keep flowers fresh for a long time during Tet using simple ingredients available at home and anyone can do.
Use wine or beer to pour into the flower vase
During Tet, wine and beer are indispensable in every household, and you can utilize them to extend the lifespan of flowers. The method is very simple, just pour a little beer or leftover wine into the flower vase, as their alcohol content will effectively eliminate harmful bacteria and provide nutrients to the flowers.
Note: Only pour about 1/4 cup of wine or beer into the flower vase. Pouring too much will cause the vase to smell bad, losing the fragrance of the flowers.
Mix sugar and vinegar with flower water
Sugar and vinegar are two common kitchen ingredients found in every household. If you want to keep flowers fresher for longer, you can use these two. The method is very simple, dissolve 3 tablespoons of sugar with 2 tablespoons of vinegar in a liter of warm water, then use this water to arrange the flowers. This type of water can keep flowers fresher for longer thanks to the acetic acid in vinegar, which can effectively remove odors and bacteria. Sugar also provides nutrients to the flowers, helping them stay beautiful and fresh longer.
Enhance the floral longevity with a mist of hairspray
Though lesser-known, this method proves highly effective. Simply spritz hairspray underneath the petals and leaves to keep the flowers fresher for longer.
Caution: maintain a safe distance to prevent the hairspray from getting into your eyes.
Utilize coins for prolonged freshness
Opt for the simplest, safest, and most cost-effective method by dropping a coin into the vase. The metal composition of coins prevents oxidation, inhibiting harmful bacterial growth and extending the freshness and fragrance of flowers.
Utilize carbonated drinks for extended freshness
Apart from alcohol, soda is commonly consumed during Tet. Its high sugar content provides ample nutrition for flowers, prolonging their freshness.
Note: Use only ¼ cup of soda per vase. If using transparent glass vases, opt for clear or white-colored sodas.
Regularly trim leaves to maintain flower freshness
In addition to the aforementioned methods, regularly trimming leaves removes damaged foliage and reduces water evaporation, thus prolonging flower freshness. Regularly changing the vase water is equally essential.
