Although Pick up Sticks has been a classic for centuries, its rules may elude many today. Yet, it's an easy and entertaining game. Continue reading to grasp the gameplay!
Key Steps
Preparing for the Game
Acquire sticks for gameplay. You'll require a set of pick up sticks to commence. These come in various materials and colors, with some sets featuring specialized sticks for lifting others.
Prepare a sheet of paper and a pen for scorekeeping. Although optional, keeping score is essential for playing multiple rounds of Pick up Sticks.
Invite someone to join you in the game. You'll need at least two players, but more can join in. Suitable for all ages, gather your family or friends for a fun time together.
Getting the Game Ready
Record all players' names on the paper. If you're keeping score, jot down everyone's names on the sheet. Leave space below each name for their scores.
Determine the target score. Choose between 200, 300, 500 points, or more. The duration of the game depends on the goal score you set.
Grip the sticks together in one hand, resembling a bunch of uncooked spaghetti. Ensure they're all standing upright. Hold them a few inches above a flat surface, such as a table or floor.
Release the sticks by opening your hand. Allow them to fall naturally. Once they've settled, the game can commence!
Playing the Game
Take turns. Start with the youngest player and proceed clockwise. Continue this sequence until the game concludes.
End your turn if you disturb other sticks. Be careful not to disrupt the position of other sticks while attempting to pick one up. If you accidentally move a stick, relinquish your turn.
Strive to collect more sticks upon successful retrieval. The aim of the game is to gather the most sticks throughout. Once you've successfully picked one up, you can attempt to retrieve another. Keep going until you accidentally disturb a stick, forfeiting your turn. Optionally, you can establish a maximum limit on sticks per turn to prolong the game and prevent one player from grabbing all sticks on their initial turn.
Earn points for each successful stick pickup. If scorekeeping, tally each player's points after their turn. Points are based on stick colors. Record each player's earned points at the end of their turn:
- Black = 25 points
- Red = 10 points
- Blue = 5 points
- Green = 2 points
- Yellow = 1 point
Utilize the black stick to relocate other sticks. If you manage to pick up the black stick (the master stick), you're allowed to use it to move other sticks away from those you wish to pick up. The black stick is the only one permitted for this purpose.
Continue playing until a winner emerges. Play until a player achieves the goal score or until all sticks are collected.
- If playing to a set score, periodically tally each player's points to track progress.
- If playing until all sticks are gathered, end the game when no sticks remain and have players count their collected sticks. The player with the most sticks wins.
- To start a new round, gather all sticks and perform another stick drop.
