From names like 'seaside paradise,' 'a step away from heaven,' to 'tropical paradise,' Maldives exerts an irresistible allure for all souls, whether craving exploration or just wanting to lie down listening to the gentle waves. Especially in recent years, the name Maldives has become quite popular among Vietnamese youth. And the next person to set foot here is none other than you with the comprehensive solo travel guide to Maldives from A to Z that we share here!
1. Best Time to Visit Maldives?
Maldives, or the Maldives Islands, is a group of coral islands in the Indian Ocean. In the past, when Maldives was mentioned, people only knew it as the smallest country in Asia or one of the smallest islands in the world. With a magical transformation, Maldives went from a tiny island nation to one of the 26 most beautiful beach paradises in the world, making everyone wish to visit at least once.

Maldives is situated in the tropical climate zone, hot and dry during the non-monsoon season due to its proximity to the equator. The ideal time to visit Maldives is during the dry season, from December to April. During this period, the weather is relatively cool and dry, ensuring the most convenient Maldives tour. However, this is the peak season, so all services are expensive, and sometimes you may struggle to book accommodations and flights.
Maldives experiences both dry and wet seasons. Visiting during the dry season tends to be more expensive @itsmetubitubIf you still want to witness the paradise on a budget, you can visit Maldives from June to October. Since it's the rainy season, the weather can be a bit unpredictable, but you can still explore the area, and notably, service costs are reduced by about 30-40%.
2. Applying for a Maldives Tourist Visa?

Source: Thành Cao
Despite being an independent nation, Maldives implements a visa-free policy for a 30-day stay for tourists from all countries. Skip the hassle of visa applications; this is another reason to quickly plan a visit to the paradise island this year.
3. Transportation to Maldives?
Currently, there are no direct flights from Vietnam to Maldives, so you'll have to take flights with at least one layover.
For the most convenient journey from Vietnam to Maldives, consider transiting through various Asian countries and choose airlines with flights to Maldives, such as Bangkok Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Tiger Air, etc. Before booking, check prices, routes, and layover times, as each airline has different policies.
– Malaysia Airlines: You can depart from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi with a layover in Malaysia.
– TigerAir: This airline operates flights from Singapore to Maldives about four times a week. This means you can travel from Vietnam to Maldives with a layover in Singapore.
– Singapore Airlines: Another option if you're traveling from Vietnam and want to layover in Singapore. However, the layover time in Singapore is over 5 hours. When booking this leg, it's advisable to book directly from Vietnam to Maldives (layover in Singapore) rather than separate legs for Vietnam – Singapore and Singapore – Maldives.
– Bangkok Airways: You have to fly from Bangkok. If you have a stopover in Bangkok before and want to go directly to Maldives, this is an excellent choice.
4. Transportation in Maldives?
The islands, including the capital Malé, are very small, so you will rarely see cars here. You can walk the entire length of the capital in just 15 minutes. Therefore, the primary modes of transportation are ferries and speedboats. Upon landing at the airport, head to the Arrival gate, turn right, and go to the end of the road where the ferry terminal to the capital Malé is located (you need to go to Malé first to catch a ferry to Maafushi).

In Maldives, you can travel between islands using ferries @shuchi_kalra
This ferry takes about 10 minutes for each trip. If you go straight, you'll reach the speedboat dock. Here, it's $10/person to go directly to Maafushi (with a flexible schedule). This is also where resorts provide transportation for their guests using their speedboats (if you've booked with the resort). Some resorts farther away offer transportation by seaplane. Note that if you stay at a resort, you are required to use their transportation (even though it might be expensive, it's a rule). Depending on your schedule, choose the type of transportation. Check the prices before booking a resort as some may have lower room rates but higher transportation fees by seaplane.

@d261fy
Seaplanes are more expensive than other modes of transportation, mainly serving guests staying at resorts @nardinegillman5. Where to stay in Maldives?
The travel cost in Maldives is relatively high as it mainly consists of beachfront resorts, some even in the midst of the ocean. A valuable tip is to actively use booking apps like Agoda, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, etc. If you've decided on this destination beforehand, spend time daily checking for deals; you might get a lucky break, saving a portion of your expenses. However, it's worth mentioning that the true value of a Maldives trip lies in savoring the environment rather than indulging in nightlife like in bustling countries.

@oksana_domoratskaya
In Maldives, islands are divided into two types: resort islands (each resort is an island) and local islands (such as Mafuushi). If you're in Maldives, try staying at a resort to understand why it's called paradise. Resorts come in various types, so consider and read reviews before deciding. The average price for resorts is usually not less than $300/night, and luxury areas can go up to $1,000/night.

@joel_capillaire

– Full-board: Buffet meals for all three meals, additional drinks are charged separately.
– Half-board: Breakfast and dinner included.
– Opt for breakfast only. Almost all resorts provide breakfast for you.

When booking a hotel, you will have various dining options @oksana_domoratskaya

It's advisable to choose the Full-board package, including 3 meals a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner @kevinsuganda
– Holiday Lodge Maldives
With a scale of 8 rooms, each offering a clean and spacious environment, meeting all criteria for location, service, hygiene, food, and amenities. This place is highly rated by travelers and is a popular choice (Rated 8.7/10 on Agoda). The lowest room price is $38.

The lowest room price is around $45. This hotel, like the above Holiday Lodge, is a super reasonable choice with comprehensive high-rated criteria. Even this hotel is rated up to 9.1/10 by travelers.
– Maafushi Inn
This hotel is similar to the above two in terms of price and quality. However, it provides various services: dining, cafe, bicycles, children's playground, private beach, massage, karaoke, and a beautiful private beach for you to enjoy the view, swim, and dive comfortably. Room prices during promotions are around $35.

@oksana_domoratskaya
– Soneva Gili Resort
This place includes 45 luxurious villas built over the water, with some villas requiring boat transportation. Each villa is meticulously designed, built, and decorated in every detail. An interesting choice for visitors here is the opportunity to enjoy a romantic dinner under the moonlight.

@summerstuff.th
– Mirihi Island Resort
Perhaps this is the most affordable resort in the list of luxury resorts in the Maldives. Mirihi Island Resort features 36 villas fully equipped with 5-star standard amenities.
@richie_cjubFor luxury resorts, additional services are available, and not all services are complimentary. Therefore, carefully check before usage to avoid unnecessary expenses. Moreover, dining at these places can be expensive, and eating outside is not common. When booking a hotel, it's advisable to choose the full-board option, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
6. What to do in Maldives?
– Scuba diving, surfing:
When in Maldives, you must indulge in the 'specialties' of the place: scuba diving and surfing.

@kaanitourbulgaria
Scuba diving is a common activity in many places, but Maldives offers an unparalleled underwater experience. Living up to its reputation as a marine paradise, the waters here are vibrant and clear, revealing the ocean floor along with over 200 coral species and unique marine life rarely found elsewhere. Immerse yourself in this marine haven, and you'll truly grasp the essence of an ocean masterpiece.

@fshela

@elviajesigue
– Sunset Viewing:
Visiting Maldives with anyone, you must capture the moment when the sun gracefully descends over the sea. The ocean reflects shades of light blue, deep green, and dark purple blending with the hues of the sunset, creating a breathtaking, colorful masterpiece.

@alimozonshop
– Dolphin Watching:

@mcpherstagram
This is a service offered by almost all the luxury resorts here. Due to the clear and blue waters in the Maldives, you can spot dolphins swimming right beneath you.
– Explore Resorts:
@oksana_domoratskayaIf you want to experience the resort feel while saving costs, you can opt for a day tour to the islands. A full-day tour to a 4-star resort on a different island costs around $65-200, depending on the resort (you can contact guesthouses and hotels on the island as they usually offer such tours).

@oksana_domoratskaya
You can explore all around the resort, participate in various activities, and avail services except for staying overnight.
– Stroll Along the Beach:

@duongtuanhh
One of the most romantic things when at the beach is taking a leisurely stroll. In Maldives, the sea is clean, clear, and blue, while the sand is white and silky. The experience of walking along the shores in Maldives promises to be truly delightful.
@oksana_domoratskaya– Dining Under the Ocean:

@cerita.cantik
This is one of the luxurious services in Maldives. Despite its high cost for a meal, many tourists still include this experience in their Maldives itinerary. It's impossible to resist having a meal when surrounded by the sea and schools of fish.

@ska_space
In Maldives, there are two underwater restaurants, namely Ithaa and Seafire Salt Sky Restaurant.
– Romantic Dinner for Couples:
@mikevisualsMaldives is not just a tropical paradise but also a haven for love. Couples can enjoy a romantic evening by the beach with glittering candles and the soothing sound of the waves. Here are some tips for those who want to have a vibrant vacation in Maldives without staying exclusively in high-end resorts. You can explore a variety of experiences at reasonable prices by checking out different tours and discoveries in Maldives!
7. Share your experiences with various tours in Maldives?
Decided to explore all the basic tours in Maldives this time, planning to just lounge on the pristine beaches next visit. Explored nearly all types of tours here, but regret missing out on the island picnic tour. On the way back from Radshoo, the manager revealed a walking path through the sea near the resort, even walking back to the resort. It turned out to be a long, fascinating sandbank about 3-4 km, incredibly scenic. Next time, I'll definitely try it out.
– Sunset Dolphin Watching Tour. If lucky with the weather, witness dolphins leaping out of the water at sunset, creating a breathtaking spectacle on the sea.
– Night Fishing Tour is an emotional rollercoaster, even more thrilling than the dolphin watching tour. Spent an hour swaying on the waves with no luck in catching any fish, almost seasick. However, towards the end, a couple managed to catch a shark over a meter long. Absolutely astounding! Of course, the tour guide later cut the line to release the shark, as shark hunting has been strictly prohibited in Maldives since 2009. The guide assured us that the shark's mouth had acid, so everyone in the group felt relieved. Climbing to the boat's deck at night was also quite enjoyable, stargazing under the starry sky.
– Private tour to Manta Point for Mantaray watching, including scooter diving. Mantarays are similar to Stingrays but much, much grander. Unfortunately, no Mantarays on the day I went, so we switched to Turtle Point for snorkeling and turtle watching. This tour is quite pricey at $150 but is a private tour with options to travel by speedboat or jet ski. It includes A to Z service, towels, water, snorkeling gear, and scooters for navigating strong currents. I've posted scooter pictures in the album.
– Scuba diving tour to see hammerhead sharks. I was eager and asked the dive center, but they refused. To dive and observe hammerhead sharks, one needs at least 8 diving lessons with scuba tanks or a diving certificate. Generally reserved for professionals.
– Shark feeding: Many people go on this tour, but Veligandu doesn't organize or recommend it. Feeding sharks in this manner disrupts their natural feeding habits. So, be cautious and avoid impacting the fantastic marine life of Maldives for personal enjoyment.
– Sandbank and resort tour if you're not staying on a resort island.
8. What to eat in Maldives?
Despite being a tourist destination, Maldives isn't known for its cuisine. Most dishes are influenced by Indian cuisine, making some of them quite challenging to eat, with coconut being a prevalent ingredient.

In hotels and resorts, you'll find a variety of dishes from different culinary traditions. Maldives also offers a chance to savor seafood, especially lobster, which is fresh but comes at a high price. Additionally, being a tropical region, Maldives boasts a rich variety of fruits. Don't forget to enjoy a refreshing glass of fruit juice by the beach.
@twofoodiesdine
When at the resort, the cost for meals outside the package can be exorbitant. Therefore, it's advisable to prepare some snacks or dry provisions to avoid hunger at night. However, make sure to carefully check the regulations of your accommodation and the country.
9. Important Tips for Traveling to Maldives
– The official language of Maldives is Dhivehi, but English is widely used.
– The currency in Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa; 1 USD is approximately 15 Rufiyaa. However, it's not necessary to exchange currency as USD is commonly accepted.
– To ensure a smooth immigration process, prepare and present necessary documents, hotel reservation confirmation, round-trip flight tickets, and credit cards.
– Don't forget to pack your swimsuit, sunglasses, hat, beach shoes, and especially a camera to capture the beautiful moments in the Maldives paradise.
– Maldives is a Muslim country, so avoid bringing pork, alcoholic beverages, and offensive cultural items.
