II. Sample essay In the guise of Miss Ut, recounting the tale of Coconut Skull (Standard)
I am Miss Ut in a family with three younger sisters. I am fortunate to marry a handsome and talented young man. Once during a diplomatic mission, while the officials and other ambassadors discussed matters, I and other ladies sat enjoying tea together. After hearing one lady recount their interesting love story, I also shared the long tale between me and the former Coconut Skull official.
In the past, my family was considered wealthy, with an abundance of possessions. My father employed quite a few people, including a kind-hearted couple in their fifties who worked diligently. They were kind-hearted indeed, but unfortunately, they were not blessed with any children.
Much later, the wife gave birth to a child without limbs, resembling a coconut in shape. According to the tales, she drank rainwater from a coconut shell while fetching firewood in the forest due to thirst. Perhaps that's why she named her child Coconut Skull. Coconut Skull was once discarded by his mother upon birth due to his unusual appearance, but he pleaded:
- Mother! I am a human being. Please let me stay with you, don't abandon me, I'm pitiful.
Years passed, Coconut Skull still only rolled around aimlessly, unable to work like other people's children. His mother became increasingly distressed. Sensing his mother's worries, Coconut Skull hurriedly asked her to speak to my father about working with the cattle. Initially hesitant because he feared someone like him couldn't handle the cattle well, my father eventually agreed.
Contrary to my father and everyone else's doubts, Coconut Skull proved to be excellent at tending the cattle. Though he only followed the cattle to the field and back to the pen, every day the cattle returned well-fed. My father was very pleased.
During harvest season, my father instructed my three sisters to take turns bringing meals to Coconut Skull. My two sisters were arrogant and often belittled Coconut Skull. Seeing Coconut Skull was kind and gentle, I was ready to treat him well.
One day, as I reached the foot of the hill, I faintly heard the sound of a flute. I was surprised because there shouldn't be anyone playing a flute in the hills. I cautiously hid behind a bush to see. I was even more surprised to see a handsome young man sitting on a hammock playing the flute. I accidentally touched a dry branch, causing it to snap. The sound of the snapping branch made the young man vanish, and Coconut Skull was lying there again. In such instances, I suspected Coconut Skull was not an ordinary human. Captivated by Coconut Skull's fascinating beauty, I secretly sympathized with him.
Coconut Skull seemed to understand my feelings. One day, my father sternly lectured my siblings and me about Coconut Skull's affairs. We were unsure of what it was about until later I found out that Coconut Skull's mother had approached my father about marriage. My father challenged Coconut Skull to bring one hundred gold coins, ten pieces of peach silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine as a bride price. Both my father and Coconut Skull's mother thought he would give up on marrying. However, on the appointed day, both Coconut Skull and his mother arrived with the betrothal gifts along with a dozen relatives. My father was astonished and awkwardly called my siblings out. He asked:
- Coconut Skull came to ask for marriage. Which of you agrees to be Coconut Skull's wife?
My two sisters sneered and mocked. I was overjoyed, so I lowered my head and smiled, expressing my willingness. My father looked momentarily surprised and angry but had to accept the gifts.
Our wedding day was very festive. However, when it came time to escort the bride, Coconut Skull was nowhere to be found. I was also relieved because the one standing beside me was the handsome young man I often saw. Everyone was amazed and delighted, except for my two sisters who were jealous and regretful.
